Blackburn College is a four-year coeducational private liberal arts college located in Carlinville, which is a city in the US state of Illinois, in Macoupin County (serving as its county seat), with a population estimated at a number of nearly 6000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
Blackburn College was established in 1837 and was named after Rev. Gideon Blackburn, an American Presbyterian clergyman, educator and missionary to Cherokee and Creek nations, who raised funds for new colleges and founded numerous congregations and churches in areas of new western settlement in Tennessee and Kentucky.
Blackburn is one of the only seven federally-recognized work colleges in the US, and has the only student-managed work program, which enables students to gain leadership experience as they manage other students.
Blackburn's athletic teams are known as the Beavers, and they compete in 11 men's and women's sports, in NCAA Division III of the NCAA's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Their mascot is Barney the Beaver.
